Biography:

Not much is known about Rachel prior to the 1840 census, and not until 1850 is she mentioned by name. I will assume that she was born in what is now West Virginia, and that she and George W. May met and married between 1835-1838. Sometime before 1850 the family moved to District 65 in Wood County Virginia (now W.VA) In 1857 the family was again on the move, this time to Kansas where George and Rachel bought 164.25 acres (SW 1/4 of section 30, twp 8, range 18) in Jefferson County for $2.50 an acre.

The number of children that George and Rachel had together isn't solid, perhaps ten and maybe eleven. Rachel died on November 12th, 1860 at the age of 43 due to complications from childbirth; the child, Bennie May, died in 1863. She is buried at Valley Falls Cemetery with her husband George W. May.
