Biography:

I have not researched William J. May in length. I could not find any civil war record from him, though it is likely he served. I am not sure if he was in West Virginia or Kansas at this point, but I have found several William Mays listed as Union soldiers in both states.

The census records over several contradicting statements. First the Children listed in the 1860 census (George and Clara), George was listed as age 10 while Alcinda was only 22, and so it is unlikely she could have been the mother while Clara was listed as age 3. In a later census, however, Alcinda claims to have had no children. The 1900 census claims that William and Alcinda were married for 42 years putting their marriage around 1858, which is after the birth of both children so it is likely that William was married before Alcinda.

William also gave contradicting statements regarding the birthplace of his parents. Their birthplace changed from Virginia, to West Virginia (was common due to W. Virginia becoming a state in 1863) and then in the 1900 Census he lists his father as being born in Germany and his mother in W. Virginia. In a 1910 Census there is a William J. May married to Alcinda and that William lists both parents as being born in Germany.

Census Information:

The 1860 Federal Census has William living in District 7, Preston County, Virginia. He was 29 and living with wife Alcinda (age 22), son George (age 10) and daughter Clary (age 3). I can't make out his occupation. He was listed as born in Virginia. He had real estate valued at 1,750 and personal property valued at 200.

The 1870 Federal Census has William living in Neosho Falls, Woodson County, Kansas. He was 39 and living with wife Alcinda (age 33) and daughter Clara (age 13). His occupation was given as farmer and he was listed as being born in Virginia. He had real estate valued at 480 and personal property valued at 400.

The 1880 Federal Census has William living in Everett Township, Woodson County, Kansas. He was 49 and living with his wife Alcinda (age 42). He was listed as being a farmer and from Virginia where he also indicated that both his parents were also from Virginia.

The 1895 Kansas State Census has William living in Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. He was 64 and living with his wife Alcinda (age 58). He was listed as being a farmer and from W. Virginia where he also indicated that both his parents were also from W. Virginia.

The 1900 Federal Census has William living in Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. He was 68 and living with his wife Alcinda (age 62). He was listed as being a landlord and from W. Virginia. Here it is indicated that his father was from Germany and his mother was from W. Virginia. He was able to read and write English. He also owned his home free of mortgage. Other information was that William and Alcinda has been married for 42 years and that Alcinda had no children with none surviving.

The 1905 Kansas State Census has William living in Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. He was 74 and living with his wife Alcinda (age 68). He indicated he was born in W. Virginia.
